How do natural stones compare to synthetic material?
There are many advantages to using natural stone in place of synthetic materials such as Corian, formica, porcelain, concrete or ceramic tile. Natural stone is durable, long-lasting and the color selection is generally far more extensive. Natural stone is considered more expensive than it actually is by most people. The value it brings with it is huge. Natural stone is affordable and its resilience proves cost effective over time. Synthetic material requires periodic replacement and costly repairs. It is also prone to burning, discoloration, scratching and can deteriorate due to normal wear and tear. Granite is one of the most durable, maintenance-free countertop materials available. Granite is a natural material made of very hard igneous rock that is second only in hardness and compacted strength to diamonds. Many colors have precious natural stones that aren't jewelery quality visible.
Cleaning
The care of natural stone is very simple and will enhance the life and beauty of your stone. Clean your stone with mild soap and water. DO NOT use any acidic cleaners. Abrasive cleaners should not be used. Avoid using chemicals such as ammonia, orange enhanced, bleach or other all-purpose cleaners.
Sealing
Natural stones have the characteristic of being porous which simply means it will absorb water, oils and chemicals. Therefore, your stone should be sealed in order to minimize staining. We seal your granite before it is installed. Resealing should be done annually and it is quick and simple.
Chipping or Scratching
Granite is a hard stone and resistant to most chipping or scratching. Like any solid surface, high impact blows can harm granite.,2 That being said, it could happen. Marble is a softer stone and is less resistant. For this reason we do not recommend marble for kitchen countertops. If used for bathroom vanities marble should definitely be sealed.
What is honed granite?
Granite is called "honed" when the polishing process is halted just before a reflective shiny surface is achieved. This gives a softer matte appearance to the stone.
Can I cut on my granite countertop?
Yes. However, it is suggested and recommended that you use a cutting board. If your granite is not sealed you may damage or stain it.
